Adult Hip & Knee Reconstruction Fellow – Brigham and Women’s Hospital / Harvard Medical School

Dr. Elyse Brinkmann was born outside of Seattle, Washington.  Her family moved around a couple of times before settling in San Diego, California, where she spent a majority of her childhood.  She was first introduced to the field of Orthopaedic surgery through several knee injuries playing volleyball in high school.  This inspired her to work in a knee ligament tissue engineering lab while pursuing her degree in Bioengineering at the University of California, Los Angeles.

She obtained her medical degree at Saint Louis University School of Medicine.  After her first year of medical school, she was accepted to the Nth Dimensions Orthopaedic Summer Internship program, through which she was first exposed to the subspecialties of Adult Hip & Knee Reconstruction and Orthopaedic Oncology during her time spent at the Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville, Florida.  Her interest in these fields continued to grow during her Orthopaedic Surgery residency at Loyola University Medical Center in Chicago, Illinois.  Dr. Brinkmann then pursued dual subspecialty training with a one-year Musculoskeletal Oncology fellowship at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, followed by a one-year Adult Hip & Knee Reconstruction fellowship at Brigham and Women’s Hospital / Harvard Medical School in Boston, Massachusetts.

Dr. Brinkmann is interested in long-term outcomes of megaprostheses used for oncologic reconstruction and complex hip and knee reconstruction.  She is also interested in diagnosis and treatment of prosthetic joint infections in these patient populations.  Throughout her career, she has maintained longitudinal relationships with many organizations such as Nth Dimensions, the Perry Initiative, and the Ruth Jackson Orthopaedic Society that are committed to improving the diversity of the field of Orthopaedic surgery.  Dr. Brinkmann is also very passionate about mentoring and teaching, and she feels most fulfilled in her career pursuits when educating young trainees.

Outside of work, she loves spending as much time as possible outdoors with her boyfriend David who is a nurse practitioner.  They love participating in activities like hiking, biking, camping, stand-up paddle boarding, and snowshoeing.  Their favorite way to explore a city is on two wheels.  Their favorite recent vacation was a 5-day hike on the Salkantay trail.
